The Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society, the precursor to Jewish Family Service (JFS) of Colorado, was established in 1872, to help meet the social service needs of Denver’s 300 Jewish pioneers.
Over the years, as our community grew so did the scope of work and number of services provided by JFS. Today, JFS touches the lives of more than 16,000 people in need each year including the elderly, refugees, the disabled, the hungry and the emotionally distressed, helping to ensure that they never haveto face a problem alone.
The core Jewish values of Tzedakah (righteousness and social justice through charitable giving), Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and Chesed (acts of loving kindness) are the basis of the 40 separate programs offered by JFS which help to alleviate suffering of the most vulnerable individuals and families throughout the Denver metro area, regardless of faith or nationality.
These programs are carried out by a cadre of skilled, compassionate professionals who work in collaboration with other communal agencies when appropriate. For example, JFS counselors work in conjunction with teachers in the Denver Public School System and individual Jewish Day Schools to meet the needs of at-risk students.
As part of the Jewish Community Foundation’s (JCF) recently established Agency Endowment Program, JCF and JFS have entered into an innovative partnership based on our shared commitment to helping those in need. Central to our efforts is securing crucial resources to ensure that JFS will forever have the means to help the vulnerable in our community.
